A post-mortem examination will this morning be carried out on the body of a man found in suspicious circumstances in West Auckland last night.
Police said they were called to a house in San Angelo Court, in Henderson, about 10pm after a 64-year-old male was found dead by family members.
On arrival they found the man bleeding on the floor of a garage.
Paramedics said they were called to the scene about 9.30pm.
A spokesperson last night said they were told they would be dealing with a serious head wound, however the man was dead when they arrived.
It is believed he died after being stabbed in the chest and neck.
Police spokesman Kevin Loughlin said a post-mortem examination would help establish the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
A scene examination was taking place and police remained at the scene overnight, he said.
Senior Sergeant Lance Gardiner last night said the man's body was found "in what were considered suspicious circumstances".
"No persons are currently sought in relation to this matter and the police investigation is continuing to establish the true nature of the incident," he said.
