KEY POINTS:
LOS ANGELES - Filmmaker Guy Ritchie is on the trail of Sherlock Holmes. The crime caper specialist has signed on to rewrite and direct a project that will reimagine the super sleuth as more adventuresome and less stuffy than previous screen incarnations.
The Warner Bros. project will mine the fictional detective's more obscure character traits, taking its cue from a forthcoming comic book by Lionel Wigram, who will serve as a producer of the feature.
Hundreds of actors have donned Holmes' trademark deerstalker hat and calabash pipe since the dawn of cinema, including Basil Rathbone, Ronald Howard and Peter Cushing.
Warner will release Ritchie's latest crime movie, RocknRolla, in October. His other credits include Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and a remake of Swept Away, starring his wife, Madonna.
