GREYTOWN Raiders have established an early lead in the Wairarapa 7A junior inter-club cricket competition.
They have won all three of their matches to take six points, two more than Carterton, Lansdowne Gold, Lansdowne-Hadlow girls, Martinborough Hawkes and Opaki Stars.
On two points are Marist No.3 and Masterton Primary School while Lansdowne
Blue and Marist No. 2 have yet to open their account.
There has been a change of format for sixth grade players with two divisions having been established there, division one and division two.
This has been done to better match teams on their abilities and points gained in earlier games will now be forfeited.
Last weekend saw Carterton sixth grade beat Lansdowne B by 48 runs. A 23-run opening partnership between Michael Hammond and Lucien Burt gave Carterton a good start, but accurate bowling by Lansdowne saw them slump to 23-3.
However, Carterton regained the ascendancy with a knock of 31 not out by player of the day, Jarrod Woods, supported by James Goodin (9) and James Burke (12). So at the end of their 25 overs Carterton were a respectable 116-5.
Lansdowne struggled to create partnerships against the steady Carterton bowling, and only a defiant ninth-wicket stand of 39 got them through to 68 all out. Woods completed a good day by taking two wickets for Carterton.
Carterton also won their seventh grade match with Lansdowne Blue by nine wickets with captain of the day Finn Yeats leading a solid batting effort.
