Seventy students from all over the country won scholarships in the annual New Zealand Educational and Scholarship Trust examinations.
The trust, which is financed by grants from a variety of New Zealand companies, will give $92,000 to successful students this year. A total of 1910 students from 217 secondary schools sat
the demanding exams.
Winners of national scholarships, the highest achievers in the examinations, will receive $1500 each. Scholarship winners will receive $500.
Students named top in the various subject categories will receive $500. Distinction and merit awards of $150 will also be made to students who did not win a scholarship but who finished in the top 15 per cent of candidates in each subject.
New medallist awards of $500 were made to five students showing "genuine, all-round" abilities. To qualify, students had to sit a minimum of five subjects, including two from humanities and one from the sciences.
