Good samaritan Lucy Knight: 'I saw a poor lady in need of help'

Auckland good Samaritan Lucy Knight has made a video to say thank you for the donations made to Givealittle following her injury.

Ms Knight was assaulted when she intervened in a hand-bag snatch attempt at a Northcote supermarket.

In the video, circulated by Givealittle, Ms Knight appears with her husband Peter Thomas.
Ms Knight said: "About two months ago I was heading to the supermarket with my two youngest [children]. I saw a poor lady in need of help, intervened, and unfortunately I ended up in need of help and ended up in hospital, where I was for five weeks."

Ms Knight suffered a brain injury in the assault.

The video shows pictures of her in hospital with her hair shaved showing a large scar running across her scalp.

Mr Thomas thanked everyone who donated to the Givealittle campaign.

"It's been overwhelming support, the community spirit, the lovely messages and of course the generosity and we are very grateful it's just helping us focus on Lucy's rehab and her recovery and it just gives us a support as we go forward. Thank you."

The attack happened on September 23, when Ms Knight, mum of six, saw teenager trying to steal another woman's handbag.

She stepped in and was assaulted, fell to the ground and fractured her skull.

She underwent surgery to relieve bleeding on her brain.

Hendrix Hauwai, 17, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with intent to rob and causing grievous bodily harm. He is yet to be sentenced,

More than $260,000 was donated through Givealittle to help Ms Knight and her family.
