This weekend is set to be chilly, with several regions expected to plunge to icy, below-zero lows before clearer weather gives way to rain next week.
MetService meteorologist Devlin Lynden told the Herald a large ridge of high pressure across the entire country would keep the weather clear rightthrough the weekend.
High pressure over NZ means clear, chilly nights & mild afternoons for most Kiwis. Eastern areas of both islands may see lingering low cloud & even a few showers, especially in the North Island. A developing SE flow also brings cloud & spotty showers to the upper North Island. pic.twitter.com/uoqmhGDwTJ
Lynden said this ridge would create a “lovely setup weather-wise” with plenty of fine spells for most people, other than low cloud, which was expected to linger on the east coast.
But he said the ideal weather was forecast to change with a new front taking charge mid next week, bringing the potential for rain.
“Early to mid next week, a front will eventually make its way onto the country, perhaps by late Wednesday or Thursday,” Lynden said.

Chilly temperatures
Wintry temperatures are set to continue, with places such as Alexandra dropping to -2C.
“Now that we’re heading into the cooler part of the year, we can expect some cooler temperatures in the mornings with quite a few areas, especially the South Island, as you may expect, reaching the very low single digits and perhaps even the negatives,” he said.
