The Trust House Wairarapa men's Open Stroke Play Championship concluded in astonishing fashion with Wellington golfer Andrew Green claiming victory in a play-off against two-time defending champion Perry Hayman in the dark last night. Hayman, gunning for his third consecutive title, came from the rear of the field to shoot asensational course record 11-under-par 61 on the final round to tie for the lead. With the sun well and truly set and natural light all but gone, play was forced to continue for another hole. However, Hayman was not able to reproduce his miraculous heroics and could only watch on as Green, last year's New Zealand amateur champion, sunk a two-foot putt for victory. Masterton's Harry Bateman finished third, only one shot off the pace.
