A loud explosion of culture rocked the Rotorua Sportsdrome as the overall winners of the 2004 National Primary Schools Kapa Haka Competition accepted their award.
When the leaders of Te Kura o Manutuke from Gisborne accepted the trophy, the rest of the 40-strong group greeted them with an explosive pokeka (haka
of goodwill). As the momentum rose and the sound became deafening, other groups took to their feet and joined in.
The Tairawhiti team also walked away with top placings in five of the aggregate sections and the female leader award.
This is the first time Te Arawa has organised the four-year-old event, with 30 teams taking part.
Next year's event will be in Tauranga.
Event organiser Monty Morrison said there was plenty of talent on stage this year.
"It's been three days of wonderful atmosphere and a great opportunity to showcase our primary school children in an environment they are familiar with."
