Red Star scored a first innings win over Academy in their Bidwell Cup Wairarapa senior men's inter-club cricket match on Saturday but whether the result will count for anything remains to be seen.
With the first day of the match the previous Saturday washed out the two teams were preparing to
play the second day at the same venue, the Park Sportsground, when it became obvious that because the wicket there had not been covered it would not be up to scratch.
Negotiations between representatives from the two teams then resulted in a decision to transfer the second day's play to Rathkeale College but whether that was done with the blessing of the WCA was still a matter of conjecture last night.
If not, the result could be null and void and the match declared a draw.
Just why the Park Sportsground pitch was not covered will obviously play a key part in these discussions with inquiries suggesting that the covers which were to be used there were actually required in Greytown for the Hawke Cup game there between Wairarapa and Horowhenua-Kapiti , and no replacement covers could be arranged.
Academy batted first when play commenced at Rathkeale and reached 156, thanks in the main to Matt Young's 56. Bowling for Stars, Troy Burling took 3-11 and Carwyn Caffell 3-45.
Red Star overhauled the Academy total with just five wickets down, Burling completing a fine-around performance by being unbeaten on 72 and Jarrod Watt making 33. Bowling for Academy, D.Jackson took 3-9.
The only other Bidwell Cup match played was that between Rathkeale College and Greytown with a decision by the association to allow for the first day of that game to be played the previous Sunday rather than the Saturday meaning that two full days of play were available to them.
A rollicking 70 by Jeremy Anderson paved the way for Greytown to make 193 in their first "dig" and the southerners looked set for first innings points when they had Rathkeale tottering at 59-4 at stumps on the first day.
But the students had other ideas and with Doug Bracewell making 63, Dean van Deventer 36 and C.Eru 28 they actually reached 198 to give them first innings points. Glen Jonas took 3-35 for Greytown.
Greytown then batted a second time but time was against either side picking up outright points and they were 79-5 when play ended.
There was no play on Saturday in the Lansdowne v Wairarapan College match because of the dampness of the pitch.
