Snow-capped Mt Taranaki stands out in this view from space in a new book.

This Landsat 8 satellite image shows Egmont National Park with Mt Taranaki at its centre, a dark green ring of protected forest and once-forested pasturelands turned into farmland.

Sanctuary: Exploring the World's Protected Areas from Space, is published by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, with support from Nasa.

Nasa administrator Charles Bolden says: "We can now better gauge the impact of human activity on our environment and measure how and why our atmospheres, oceans and lands are changing."
