Congratulations to the Styleline Homes Division 2 team who, after leading their Wellington men's interclub competition all season, claimed the title and the Waikanae Cup in a convincing fashion last Saturday.
Playing Manor Park at Paraparaumu they started in the best possible manner with a 4/1 win in the foursomes, followed
up by a 7?2? victory in the afternoon's singles for a clear-cut 11?/3? total.
There were clear-cut 7/6 wins to Craig McIntosh and Michael Schofield in the morning while Jeff Tuoro (6/5), Michael Schofield (5/3), Craig McIntosh (7/5) and Jason Paku (5/3) all registered big singles victories. Craig and Jason in particular played extremely well, with team captain, Jason, leading from the front by going through the competition undefeated in the singles and with only one foursomes loss. Michael Schofield's win was extra satisfying as he defeated a fellow member of the Wellington Junior Golf Academy.
The locals have now qualified for the promotion/relegation series involving Masterton, the top team from Division 2, and the three lowest teams in Division 1: Otaki, Miramar and Manor Park. Incidentally it is the first time in 30 years that Manor Park has been involved in this crunch series.
The first round is on Saturday May 13 with Masterton against Miramar and Otaki versus Manor Park. The winners then play off in the final while the losers go head to head to find out who goes up or who goes down. For Masterton its simple ? two losses and they stay in Division 2 in 2007, one win and they go up to Division 1.
The Division 6 match scheduled for Lansdowne last Saturday was postponed because of the weather but Division 3 did get to play Te Marua at that course, going down 10/5. This wasn't a bad result for an away match with a number of the regular team unavailable, though I do note that Jeff Ogg, one of the side's fixtures, did take the "Tuibum" Trophy. "Super Sub" Dennis Hogg responded to a call to action late on Friday night though he didn't manage a victory.
There is one round to go against runaway leaders Mornington at Lansdowne, with Masterton having to beat the visitors 15/0 to take the title. I sense that the team might be happy to see Mornington go to Division 2 because Masterton have monumental problems with the very demanding Mornington layout.
With school holidays still on the go numbers were down for the 9-holers playing in their putting competition last week. It was Julie Hamilton to the fore again with just 14 putts, ahead of Rosie Wellbrock with 16, though Rosie did take the prize for the longest drive.
Nine-holers should note that there is a tournament for you coming up at Otaki next Monday May 9. It should be a good day with a number of locals going over and staying the night. Note sure about that girls!
On Monday in warm overcast conditions a good field of 44 Vets played in their weekly stableford. Results:
Women: Brenda Perry 25 pts 1st, Sue Blathwayt 22 pts 2nd, Bib Vallance 22 pts 3rd.
Men Group 1: Charles Anderson 27 pts 1st, John Worley 26 pts 2nd, Jack Richmond 25 pts 3rd.
Men Group 2: Alan Blundell 36 pts 1st, Michael Bell 28 pts 2nd, Graeme Newland 28 pts 3rd.
Geoff Davies and Brenda Perry were nearest the pin at the Fagan Ford 8th hole.
On Tuesday 46 players teed of on a fine morning for the Nancy McCormick 36 hole Foursomes. However the fine morning disappeared into mist and fog to test the eyesight of all! Morning rounds were uniformly average but after a good lunch break the afternoon rounds showed much improved golf.
The winners with a score of 148 were Liz Armstrong and Carolyn Springer, runners up with 149 were Janna Blundell and Jan Tatham.
The highlight of the week for the women has to be A Hole In One by Jo Philps on the 11th. The perfect shot ? 2 bounces and into the hole. Well done, Jo.
Next weekend sees the staging of the Trust House Wairarapa Men's Open 72 hole stroke play championship. This year marks the 70th anniversary for this prestigious event although it hasn't been held on 70 occasions, as there was a 4 year break during World War II. From the beginning the tournament has attracted some outstanding golfers with names like Tommy Horton, Bryan Silk, Bob Charles, John Hornabrook, Michael Campbell and Stephen Scahill figuring amongst the prize winners.
With the Tournament doubling as a Wellington Rep. Trial there is the usual strong entry of Seniors, with at least a dozen plus handicappers in the field including last year's runaway winner, Perry Hayman, and runner-up, Adam Church. However, they won't necessarily be the favourites to win with at least five current Wellington representatives in the field. I note the Spearman-Burn twins with Peter, in particular, in great form after his win in the North Island boys' tournament. Then there is Ricky Kauika who has Masterton connections, and our own Brent McKenzie, looking to take the third leg of an elusive treble of golf tournaments.
At the request of the Wellington Golf Association four highly promising young women golfers, including Carterton's Emma Wills, have been included in the field. The aim is to give the four experience in a 72 hole tournament. They receive no favours, playing off the men's tees throughout the weekend.
The main concern regarding entries lies with the Intermediates who are allotted 32 places in the 96 person field. At this stage entries are well down in this division, possibly as a result of many former Intermediates finding themselves amongst the Seniors. It is still not too late for you to be in so contact the club-house right away.
Ordinary members should be aware that they have reciprocal rights this weekend.
