Players on the verge of selection for the Wairarapa senior men's cricket team this season will get the chance to further advance their claims in a limited-overs match at Queen Elizabeth Park, Masterton on Sunday.
A Wairarapa X1 will meet a Horowhenua-Kapiti XI in what was originally scheduled to be an
encounter between the senior B teams from the two provinces with selector Robin James confirming the Wairarapa side was selected with the future in mind.
"We want to give the fringe players every chance to impress and this is a great opportunity for them to do so," James said. "We'll be watching how they react very closely."
The composition of the Wairarapa XI had not been finalised at the time these notes were penned, but players expected to be involved include Jamie Perkin, Richard Lewis and Matt Young from Academy, Jeremy Anderson, Sam Monaghan and Joel Macklin from Wairarapa College, Paul Lyttle and Ewan Burt from Greytown and Jarrod Watt and Daniel Stoneley from Red Star.
No players from Rathkeale College were available because of a clash with inter-school commitments.
Meanwhile the second round of matches in the Bidwell Cup senior men's inter-club competition will get under way tomorrow.
Wairarapa College and Greytown will be buoyant after picking up maximum points in their opening games against Academy and Red Star respectively while Rathkeale College managed first innings points against Lansdowne.
Red Star have enough sting in their attack to keep Wairarapa College honest in their match at Wairarapa College but the brittleness of their batting has to be a worry.
They struggled to make any impact there against Greytown, and while the Wairarapa College bowlers couldn't be labelled as startling in terms of pace, they are certainly steady enough to take full toll of any impatience on the part of the Stars batsmen.
Lansdowne and Greytown will play at the Pugh Sportsbowl with Greytown starting favourite because of their greater depth in both and batting and bowling departments.
Rathkeale College have had a busy ? and successful ? inter-school programme lately and will be well primed for their match against Academy at Rathkleale Oval.
However, they will be taking nothing for granted as Academy have some talented individuals capable of swinging the result of a game with bat or ball.
