Ushers cleaning up after a movie at the Queen Street cinema complex yesterday discovered the body of a man.
St John Ambulance were alerted by a staff member who said the man was unconscious and too heavy to move to the floor to perform CPR.
Paramedics found him in cardiac arrest and were unable to save him.
The body was removed last night and an autopsy will be carried out today to establish the cause of death.
Detective Inspector Bernie Hollewand said the police inquiry was being treated as an unexpected death in a public place.
He said there was some blood around the man but police would wait for an autopsy before commenting on injuries.
He was among an audience of about 20 people watching the 12.30pm screening of the film A Lot Like Love, a romantic comedy.
Other movie-goers had vacated the theatre a few minutes before the man was found at 2.20pm.
