A 20-year-old man accused of trading in child pornography through the internet has been sentenced in the Whangarei District Court to three months' periodic detention.
David Malcolm Cowie, formerly of Whangarei, appeared before Judge Thomas Everitt yesterday, having admitted five charges of "distributing objectionable material in expectation of payment" on July
19 and July 21 last year.
He was living then in Christchurch, using his family's home computer.
The court was told that Cowie was discovered by an Internal Affairs inspector investigating traders in chat channels created by users.
Using various nicknames online, Cowie had sent the inspector pictures, including one of a 12-year-old girl having sex with an adult male and others of girls aged between 8 and 10 years performing oral sex on men.
The court was told that Cowie had not had an interest in or looked for child pornography since September last year.
