The weather is expected to remain changeable for the rest of the week but should settle down in time for Valentine's Day and the Black Caps' second test match in Wellington, the MetService says.
Meteorologist John Law said Auckland would get off relatively lightly with fine spells expected until tomorrow.
The east coast of the North Island would benefit most, with the rain being replaced by sunnier skies and temperatures back into the mid-20s.
"The troublesome area of low pressure, which brought some wet weather to eastern areas of the North Island and Wellington over the weekend, looks like it will finally pull away to leave some brighter weather there for Tuesday,'' Mr Law said.
"However, another area of low pressure, accompanied by a cooler southwest flow, is set to push cloud and some rain over the South Island during the week.''
Current indications were for higher pressure and settled weather at the end of the week, in time for Valentine's Day and the second cricket test match at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Friday.
"But it'd pay to stay up to date with the latest forecasts before embarking on that romantic picnic,'' Mr Law said.
