Fire crews battled for an hour and a half to control a potentially explosive fire at a service station in central Canterbury late yesterday afternoon.
The Glentunnel Service Station at the Coal Track-Homebush corner was well ablaze when fire fighters arrived.
Although the station was destroyed, its underground fuel tanks were unscathed, sparing nearby houses.
The area around the station was flooded with water to prevent sparks reigniting the fire.
Fire engines from Coalgate, Darfield and Hororata battled the blaze, said Chris Munro of the Fire Service's southern communication centre.
Water tankers from West Melton and Burnham were called in to help with water supply and a specialist fire officer from Christchurch was also called out.
