Saturday saw the commencement of the 2007 season and the highlight was the annual playing for the W.J Feast Memorial Cup. This is played for on a mixed partner basis using the Canadian Foursomes Stableford scoring system. As this system utilises each partner playing alternate shots after selecting the best
drive on each hole you generally need a team that is very much in tune with the game.
I was lucky enough to play with the winning pairing of Gordon Dragovich and Margaret Thompson and can honestly say they played very well. A couple of good putts and a wedge over trees, (Margaret said she couldnt play the shot, but it came off ), ensured two consecutive 4 pointers in a row and a final total of 43 points.
Runners up were Lesley and David Sadler on 41 points, followed by Marge Robson and Stu Ingham with 39 and then three pairings on 38; Nadine Jansen/Warren Birdling, Jeannie Taylor/Lyn Evans and Shirley/Patrick Carew.
The remainder of the field consisted of men and these were split into two divisions. Winner of the first division was Barry Bentley with a fine 42 points, followed by Brian Field on 39 and Dean Schaef, Eric Behringer and Nigel Bain all on 38.
Division Two was won by Bill Shakespeare with 39 points, followed by Les Cherry and Frank DeLaney on 37 and Matthew Larsen scored 34.
Twos were picked up by the pairings of Caral/George Rink, Warren Birdling/Nadine Jansen and Lesley/David Sadler. The Mens twos were scored by Nigel Bailey, Chris Ranish, Barry Bentley and Trevor Clayton. Caral Rink picked up the nearest the pin prize for the Women and Bill Shakespeare had a fine day by also picking up the Marquis of Normanby mens nearest the pin prize.
January Play:
During January members played for the Summer Cups which was on a best of three rounds out of 5 basis. The most consistent of the men proved to be Larry Gray, a popular winner of the Men's cup. The Ladies Summer cup was won by Val Willis who once again showed why her name regularly appears on the Ladies trophy list.
Reminder:
This coming Saturday, 10 February the Carterton course is closed all day. The Club is hosting the first round of the Men's Wellington 36 hole interclub play. This is at Division two level and as Carterton has a bye in round one, (host club), our team will be watching results with interest. We wish Alister Smith (Selector) and the team all the best for this competition.
The course is also closed on Monday as it is our turn to host Ladies interclub. All the best to our teams in those competitions.
Don't forget to get your 4 person teams, (two should be non-golfers), in for the Annual Business House Tournament. This is over three consecutive Wednesday nights commencing 21 February, with 6 different holes completed each night to finalise the 18 holes. Ring me on 06-379-8457 to get a team in, it is a lot of fun.
Finally all the best for the new golfing year, just remember in every round of golf there is at least one shot which will bring you back for another try another day!
