Defending Senior A club rugby champions Carterton will need to find the sort of form that led them to last year's title this weekend if they wish to stake a claim for a top six spot.
Having suffered three successive losses, their campaign is in danger of being derailed well before
the business end of the season.
Should they lose at home this weekend to Greytown/Tuhirangi, the side will be faced with the task of beating one of Pioneer and Eketahuna in the following two weeks just to keep their hopes alive.
Greytown, in turn, are in fine shape after the opening stages having notched three from three despite a string of injuries and absent personnel.
On current evidence, their back line is a class above Carterton's and they have an added advantage in the accurate boot of Kingi Kaiwai.
However, the weather could well prove to be a leveller again on Saturday should the rain set in and limit the match to a crash and bash affair, which would work more in Carterton's favour.
In the weekend's other decisive clash, Marist host Pioneer at Memorial Park in what promises to be an exciting encounter.
The two sides are currently locked in fourth spot on nine points each, with their only losses to date at the hands of high-flying Gladstone.
While the home side is outgunned in size upfront, their more mobile forward pack could prove the key on the back of first-five Paddy Rimene's boot.
Pioneer, in turn, have looked dangerous with ball in hand and will look to utilise their powerful loose-forward trio and midfield to break the advantage line.
Sixth-placed Martinborough have home advantage but might be hard pressed to stem the Eketahuna tide in their clash.
The northern Wairarapa side travel south having notched 130 points in their last two hit-outs, be it against Puketoi and Masterton Red Star, and are heavy favourites to run riot yet again.
Table-topping Gladstone should, on current form, stroll passed visiting Puketoi.
However, the underdogs are riding high after their first victory in the best part of two years and will at the very least put up a determined fight.
Finally, Masterton Red Star will look to bounce back from last week's pasting at Eketahuna when East Coast make the trip into town.
