Call to think tanks

Residents are being urged to consider installing a rainwater tank to ensure access to fresh water in a major disaster.

Wairarapa Civil Defence said the recommendation from Greater Wellington Regional Council has merit, although the options will need to be further investigated.

Council recommended the tanks earlier this week after recent earthquakes.

Wairarapa emergency management officer Paul Walker said storing three litres of water per person a day was recommended for an emergency, but it would be good to have more for hygiene and cooking purposes.

If Wairarapa was hit by a significant disaster, it would be likely homes would be out of water for a few days as residents try to source alternative water supplies.

Mr Walker said the tanks would be helpful to support neighbours who may not be as well prepared.

He said he has seen examples of tanks storing emergency water in places such as schools, which would be used as a headquarters in an emergency.

Council deputy chair Peter Glensor said people were encouraged to store rain water tanks on their properties.

"A basic rainwater tank is pretty easy to install... having a tank like this on your property ensures you have your own source of water even if the water supply isn't working.

"It's really important we are as prepared as possible for a natural disaster," he said.

"We cannot afford to be complacent."
