A burst water main in Upper Hutt which caused a "pretty spectacular" fountain of water and hindered the train service has been fixed.
A spokeswoman for Wellington Water said the 200mm water main, which burst at Silverstream Station, was patched up about 4.30pm.
She was unsure how much water might have been lost but said it "would have been a fair amount".
The water main fed the suburb of Pinehaven but there was enough water in storage to save residents' supply being affected. The Silverstream Volunteer Fire Brigade shared photos and footage of the burst main on Facebook, showing the water erupting up from beneath the railway tracks.
The incident forced the cancellation of trains in the affected area, but train services were back up and running again by 7pm.
