Other voices - where are the language strongholds?
Maori speakers make up larger proportions of the populations of Ihumatao, (around Auckand Airport), East Tamaki, Totara Heights, Clendon Park and Papakura than anywhere else.
Samoans live in largest proportions around Mangere, Ihumatao, Otahuhu, Avondale, Henderson, Mt Roskill and Glen Innes.
Tongan peopleare most populous in Sandringham, Penrose, around Mangere, Tamaki and Otara, and Cook Island Maori favour East Tamaki and Chapel Downs.
The area where Niueans are most dominant is Favona, near Mangere.
Asian communities The wealthier eastern suburbs are most populated by Cantonese and Northern Chinese (Mandarin) speakers, who are also found in high numbers in West Harbour and Birkenhead.
Koreans are most concentrated on the North Shore, particularly near Torbay and in Sunnynook, and in West Harbour.
Tagalog speakers (from the Philipines) are concentrated most at Middlemore, Khmer speahers (from Cambodia) prefer Manukau central and Chapel Downs, and Japanese people are more spread out, but tend to migrate to Meadowbank and central Auckland.
Indian languages Hindi and Gujarati speakers are most prevalent in New Windsor and Lynfield, and Tamils are most common in St John's and Meadowbook. Gujarati speakers also like Westmere, and Hindi speakers most prefer Penrose.
Europeans/Others Afrikaans speakers make up slightly higher proportions of the populations of Howick, Browns Bay and Torbay.
People living in Beach Haven, Mangere and Clendon Park, Manurewa are more likely to hear the Arabic language.
Speakers of Italian are fairly evenly spread, Spanish speakers are more numerous around the central city, and Serbo-Croat speakers tend to live around Lincoln, in West Auckland.
German speakers make up larger proportions of the populations of Waiheke Island, the central city area and the far west, and French speakers are most likely to be found around Otahuhu, St Mary's Bay, Parnell and Remuera, and Mission Bay.
New Zealand Sign Language users are most predominant around Middlemore and Kelston.
