Man dies in police custody in Auckland, investigation launched

An investigation has been launched after a man died in police custody this morning.

Police were called to Auckland’s Mt Roskill about 9.40am after several disorder reports.

Officers found the man on Morrie Laing Ave and arrested him before he was taken to the Auckland District Custody Unit.

Acting Auckland City District Commander Inspector Grant Tetzlaff said the arrest took place “without incident”.

However, police said the man later collapsed at the custody unit and was confirmed dead after ambulance staff arrived.

Tetzlaff said the man’s next of kin had been told of his death and were being offered support.

A critical incident investigation is underway to examine Wednesday morning’s events.

Police have also reported the death to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
