An informal poll of Northcote residents by MP Ian Revell shows support for a single city for Auckland.
Of 19,400 questionnaires delivered to households in his seat, 4000 were returned and two-thirds said they supported further amalgamation of Auckland's seven local bodies.
Mr Revell, who proposed a single city tothe Auckland Region Community Boards Association last month, said the existing bodies should be amalgamated into one super council of 25 representatives. Councillors should be elected from wards based on the city's parliamentary electorates.
Existing community boards should be given extra powers to handle local issues, he said.
Last week, former Prime Minister Sir Geoffrey Palmer proposed a single Greater Auckland council backed with extra revenue-raising powers.
But Mick Gannaway, chairman of the Auckland Region Community Boards Association, said he opposed schemes that removed elected representatives too far from ordinary citizens.
"The more you remove councillors, the more you give power to the bureaucracy."
An election in a ward the size of a parliamentary electorate would mean only candidates with enough funds to run a campaign would stand. "It would be like running for the mayoralty of the old borough councils in Auckland."
