Heavy overnight rain is believed to have caused part of a busy Auckland road to crumble away.
Around 100mm of rain fell in Auckland over the last 24 hours, the MetService said.
Subsidence has seen two lanes of College Hill Rd in Ponsonby closed to traffic this morning.
Police asked traffic andpedestrians to keep away from the area. College Hill is a commonly used route between the suburb and the city.
Thunderstorms and heavy rain last night caused havoc in several parts of Auckland, most notably in Half Moon Bay and Howick. About 12 homes in Half Moon Bay suffered flooding, and in Angelo Rd, Howick, a small creek flooded the road, covering it in up to 45cm of water at the height of the downpour.
The flooding carried sewage into an apartment block in Gillies Rd, Otahuhu, where it poured into garages and laundries.
Firefighters took more than 30 calls about the weather from St Heliers, Howick, Glen Innes and Half Moon Bay alone.
Flooding also was reported on the Ellerslie-Panmure highway.
