Athletic Carterton's 100th birthday bash was a huge success with more than 80 people enjoying the wit and wisdom of guest speakers Katherine Switzer and Roger Robinson.
Swizter related the story of her now famous entry in the Boston marathon which at that time was an all-male preserve, something made very
apparent to her by an irate race director!
She then went on to talk about the growth in women's athletics world-wide with particular emphasis on the emergence of the African nations there.
Robinson dwelt on the history of the marathon and also touched on the dominance of the East African countries in major marathons and distance races.
Opportunity was taken at the function for the president of the Wellington centre to present Athletics New Zealand long service awards to Lois Pitt and Steve Edge, two members of the Carterton club who have given valuable service to the sport over many years.
Meanwhile, a record 31 runners took part in the Child Canter twilight run-walk road series on Tuesday evening and some good times were registered over a hilly course starting at the Belvedere Hall.
Lynne Birkett made the most of her handicap to be first walker home in the 2km event while Nathan Whiteman was first runner home over that distance.
A mix up in the handicaps in the 5km run meant a couple of the starters headed the field home by quite a margin but times were later amended and the results adjusted as a consequence.
