A man is being treated in hospital after being struck by an ambulance travelling to an emergency.
The middle-aged man was hit by the ambulance after getting off a bus and crossing Main North Road, in northern Christchurch, about 1.15pm this afternoon.
Detective Senior Sergeant Virginia Le Bassaid she understood the ambulance was travelling to a "priority one" job north of the city, and its sirens and flashing lights were operating.
It is unclear what speed the ambulance was travelling at.
The man is believed to have suffered facial injuries, but is in a stable condition.
The busy arterial route was closed off by police investigating the crash this afternoon.
The two St John Ambulance officers in the vehicle were being interviewed by police, along with witnesses.
In a statement, St John regional operations manager Chris Haines confirmed the ambulance was on the way to an emergency, and using lights and sirens, when "regrettably a male pedestrian was injured".
Another ambulance was sent to the original callout, Mr Haines said.
The vehicle involved had been taken away by police's Serious Crash Unit for examination "as per normal procedure".
