Police suspect speed and alcohol contributed to a fatal crash in Auckland early yesterday, one of four deaths on the roads at the weekend.
Kavafau Vunileva, 21, from Three Kings, was the front-seat passenger in a car that crashed into a power pole and a wall.
Police believe the car was speedingalong Mt Smart Rd, Onehunga, at 6.45am before the crash.
Mr Vunileva died at the scene. The driver and a rear-seat passenger, both believed to be in their early 20s, were taken to hospital. The passenger was in a serious condition.
Senior Sergeant Tony Miller of Auckland City police said it was "another avoidable tragedy" where speed and alcohol were suspected to be involved.
A Rotorua millworker is dead after his car collided with a truck and trailer on Saturday.
Jason Perfect, 29, was the sole occupant of the car.
The crash happened at 3.50am on State Highway 5 about 15km south of Rotorua, closing the road for more than three hours. Rotorua police said indications were that Mr Perfect, who was travelling north, crossed the centreline.
Two men died in separate accidents in the Waikato on Saturday morning.
A 55-year-old was killed when his car and trailer tipped over near Te Kuiti shortly after 10am.
A 45-year-old man died when his truck tipped on to its side and smashed into an embankment at Waitomo, 20km north of Te Kuiti, about 10.30am. Their names were not available.
