The gunman who robbed the BNZ Bank at Akaroa has been caught in the act on the bank's security camera.
The photograph of the crime and of the getaway car have been included in a flyer which is being distributed to residents all over Banks Peninsula.
And police believe the
Akaroa gunman could still be on the Peninsula.
"We're relying on the public to help us with this. Maybe someone will recognise the man, particularly the yellow 'beanie' he is wearing," said Sergeant Gil Stace of the Lyttelton Police.
Earlier this week it was revealed that locals tried to stop an armed robber after he held up the BNZ Bank at Akaroa on Monday.
Police said a local threw a rubbish tin at the front passenger side window, breaking it, as the offender made his escape.
And a couple also tried to block the car's exit.
The hold up man entered the BNZ Akaroa at 11.55am on Monday and presented a firearm at the three staff working there, demanding money, said Sergeant Gil Stace of Lyttelton.
A customer entered as the offender was leaving. The bank was closed all day after the incident.
Sergeant Stace said that a considerable sum of money was taken.
Cordons were put in to close off routes out of Akaoa over Banks Peninsula and a helicopter was called in to help sweep the area.
On Tuesday afternoon police located the vehicle used in the hold up.
It was a grey/silver Gallant which had been reported unlawfully taken from St Albans last week.
The hold up man was described as being in his 30s, tall , of slight build, with blond hair and wearing a yellow beanie, black track trousers and top.
