The first refrigeration apprentice that one Masterton-based firm has ever had did his colleagues proud in a national competition at the weekend.
Adam Brooks was the runner-up in the Wallie Askew Memorial Trophy Refrigeration Workskills Competition after winning the regionals in Manawatu two months before.
"It's great what I did, I'm extremely happy.
"Second in New Zealand is pretty good, it gives you a lot of other opportunities in the field," he said.
"It was a really close competition overall, 2? points more would have been better."
Mr Brooks is a third-year refrigeration apprentice at CE & R (Callister Electrical and Refrigeration Limited).
He said his second placing is a positive thing for his employers too because it proves they have done a good job of teaching him.
Entering the competition run by the Institute of Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers of New Zealand is a one-off opportunity because it is solely run for third-year apprentices.
Mr Brooks' prize included trade tools and two training subsidies.
He will complete his apprenticeship in six months and wants to complete an electrical qualification after finishing his diploma in refrigeration.
CE & R Ltd owner Murray Callister said Mr Brooks is conscientious, thorough and particular, which are all important traits in the refrigeration industry.
"We are very proud of him, it is a great achievement.
"Let's hope we have many more like him because they are hard to come by ? someone with his ability and keenness," he said.
He said Mr Brooks was the first refrigeration apprentice CE & R employed.
