The construction phase of a $4.5 million overhaul has begun at Kuranui College.
Masterton-based firm D. R. Borman won the tender to build the $2.2 million learning space that forms the revamp centrepiece and comprises four laboratories and three general classrooms surrounding an atrium.
Principal Geoff Shepherd said earlier that the new block would be distinguished by "wide open spaces with lots of glass and light and a big floating roof" topping the seven classrooms, which would allow the wheeling-in of classroom modules to match the science being taught. He said building had started slightly late, although the new learning space was expected to be finished by mid-November and would be officially opened in time for the new school year.
Covered walkways would be constructed throughout the school and a specialist computer room built to house high-specification machines for photography, design and graphics classes.
There had been an idea floated to name the new science and mathematics block after the original principal, Sam Meads, although suggestions are still welcome from the school and wider community.
Original revamp plans had also featured space for more classrooms, according to future needs, a possible carpark area using a paper road on the northern border of the grounds, and refurbishment of the college administration block should funds allow.
