One person is dead following a house fire last evening in Pakotai, about 50 km west of Whangarei.
The fire service was called around 9 pm but, by the time they had travelled 30 km from Kaihoke, the old wooden farmhouse had burned to the ground.
The victim is believed to be a man who lived in the house, which was in an isolated area.
The fire service says there was no electricity connected to the house, and an open flame may have started the fire.
Last month three children died in another Northland house fire. Their home, near Herekino, southwest of Kaitaia, did not have electricity and it appeared candles were being used for lighting.
