Charlie Sheen is being tipped to replace Spin City star Michael J. Fox, who is quitting the comedy series at the end of the season.
Fox is battling Parkinson's disease and is leaving the show to spend more time with his family.
ABC and the show's production company, DreamWorks, are talking to
Sheen about joining the cast - which includes Barry Bostwick and Heather Locklear - and taking on the role of the hard-charging deputy mayor.
One catch: the show is filmed in New York. Sheen lives in Los Angeles and the production may have to move there to accommodate him.

Bart Simpson has revealed that Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound and Quick-Draw McGraw taught him to speak.
But the voice of the cartoon character confessed to one embarrassing shortcoming - she cannot draw him. Nancy Cartwright, whose voice brings Bart Simpson to life in the cartoon series, told the Guardian newspaper that she had planned from the age of 10 to work as a voice actor for cartoons.
She trained with old-school voiceman Dawes Butler. "He was the voice of Huckleberry Hound, Quick-Draw McGraw, Yogi Bear and all those great Hanna-Barbera characters."
Cartwright said voice-overs work wonders for an actor's longevity in a notoriously fickle business. "These guys were still working and doing these voices way into their 70s and one or two into their 80s."

Friends star Lisa Kudrow, co-starring with Diane Keaton in the upcoming movie Hanging Up, found common ground with the esteemed Keaton, who also directs the comedy-drama about three sisters and their dying father.
"Growing up I wasn't sure I was funny," Kudrow said. "I was told by a drama teacher, 'People will either get you or they won't. Most of the world will probably just think you're stuffed up.'
"Then I met Diane and she kept saying, 'I'm not funny either'."
Kudrow found that the most challenging moment in making Hanging Up, which also stars Meg Ryan and Walter Matthau, came when she had to cry on screen. "Walter is on his death bed and I'm supposed to break down," she says, "and the tears wouldn't come."
