KEY POINTS:
People frequently ask me - or more often tell me - to write about mismatched couples.
Namely, good looking girls with average looking men.
It seems this anomaly is the source of much consternation for my readers, who want to know why it is so prevalent.
Well, I always thought it
was quite obvious really...
Because good looking men are dickheads.
Okay, okay, so that is a sweeping generalisation. But there is some truth in it.
The male ego is a tiresome beast at the best of times, never mind when said ego has been inflated and stroked by gaggles of besotted girls.
For every woman that realises pin up boys are not worth the effort, there are another dozen ready to take her place and swoon over said male.
Indeed, I would argue that the reason good looking men can be such dickheads is because women let them get away with it.
A friend, Stacy - who is by all counts a stunning creature - used to go out with a male model, Dan.
While they made a ridiculously attractive couple, Stacy always felt that Dan was too good for her and thus, excused his often abysmal behaviour for fear of him leaving her.
It didn't help that everywhere they went, girls flocked around Dan, treating him like a rockstar rather than the B-grade catalogue model he really was.
After finally coming to her senses, Stacy ditched Dan, and now goes out with a lovely young man named Harry.
Charming, funny and a bit of geek, Harry is the best thing that ever happened to her.
Instead of reminding her how lucky she is to have him, he makes her feel he is lucky to have her.
A reader Max left this comment on last week's blog about Stray Thoughts: "After behaviour like this I can only assume the reason that she hasn't already dumped him is because he is (to use the common term) 'hot'. If her hormones weren't interfering she would have moved on already.
"Come on girls, it's time to forget about the pretty boys and head down to the comicbook store for your next boyfriend. Geeks may look plain and have no fashion sense but the advantages are many; he will appreciate you more, he will be smarter (probably earn more) and with his lack of good looks and confidence you know that no other woman will try to steal him from you."
I have to say, I'm way ahead of you Max. I'm all about the geeks, as are many of my contemporaries.
But what I find interesting is that this rarely swings the other way.
When was the last time a guy ditched his beautiful but high maintenance girlfriend in favour of the less attractive, smart, funny girl?
NB: The above comments refer to good looking girls with average looking men of the same age. If you see a good looking girl with an average looking man several years her senior, she is clearly in it for the cash.
