This tale, set in a rendition of Montreal's Petite Italie area, is about as culturally correct as a Dean Martin album track.
Luke Kirby plays Angelo Barbarini, who has been teased since he was a kid for being "a sissy". Angelo lives with
his parents, Gino (Paul Sorvino) and Maria (Ginette Reno), despite the fact that he is well past the usually accepted age for leaving home.
Angelo has always wanted to write for television but this
hasn't worked out. He is in love with Nino, his friend since those tormented childhood days, but Nino won't 'fess up to his feelings. Which is understandable when you see what happens when Angelo's parents find out why their son isn't meeting a nice Italian girl.
Gino and Maria do not take the news well. Nor does Nino's mother, Lina (Mary Walsh), who will apply the formidable force of Italian motherhood to "straighten" the boys out.
Mambo Italiano is a lightweight, funny comedy that occasionally slides into syrup. If you enjoyed My Big Fat Greek Wedding or Muriel's Wedding you'll get the picture, and an enjoyable evening's entertainment.
The DVD is hardly worth the bother. The picture (1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer) isn't especially great, audio (Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround stereo) so-so and there are few extras. Rent the video.
