Run DMC certainly helped start something back in the early 80s. First they put the "rap"into "rap-rock" with their Aerosmith duet Walk This Way, and became the Ramones of hip-hop in the process. Like the late Joey and co, the trio have become
black-clad cartoon figures respected for their longevity and legacy but forever tied to their groundbreaking heyday.
Which is where Crown Royal comes in, their first album since 1993's Down With The King and Jason Nevin's hit remix of It's Like That in 1998.
It's a celebrity roast of sorts, with the likes of rockers Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst and rappers Everlast and Method Man giving Reverend Run, DMC and Jam Master Jay many an endorsement over the dozen tracks, most of which maintain the classic (that is, woefully dated), Run DMC sound. But the Walk This Way prize goes, curiously enough, to Rock Show with Third Eye Blind's Stephan Jenkins.
Amusing enough. But in the words of LL Cool J: "Don't call it a comeback."
