Emett said he had stopped in to see Paltrow and her Glee co-creator husband Brad Falchuk while on his way to play golf at the nearby Pebble Beach course.
Their celebrity foodie friendship was first cemented by hasselback potatoes in 2023, with Paltrow sharing a photo of her attempt at the chef’s spud recipe.
“Last night’s hasselback potatoes from this cute chef I found here on Instagram,” she wrote, tagging Emett.
“I’d give those a solid 10/10 @gwynethpaltrow,” he replied.
Emett told Coast Breakfast host Toni Street he and wife Helen “had always been fans” of Paltrow before their social media exchange.
“We’ve got a couple of her cookbooks at home ... we sent her one of our cookbooks and she messaged back that she’d already ordered it online.”
The pair have gone on to collaborate several times in the years since, with Emett’s cooking frequently being featured by the Oscar winner’s lifestyle brand Goop.
In 2024, Paltrow confessed in a newsletter she had a “chef crush” on the Kiwi cook “for a little over a year” before she was finally able to host him for dinner.
She said they recreated Emett’s hasselback potatoes as a nostalgic nod to what had made her “first fall” for his culinary prowess.
Goop has become a powerhouse brand since Paltrow founded it in 2008, expanding from a simple newsletter into a global lifestyle business.
The company has also worked with another famous Kiwi, Emma Lewisham, launching the Auckland-based businesswoman’s eponymous skincare line on its online site.
