We love paintings, prints, clocks and mirrors, but for something a bit different we’ve dug around for five of the best other ways to dress up a wall you don’t dare bare.
1: Wall decals
An easy and affordable way to jazz up a room, we dig decals. Made from quality vinyl, decals are removable and mostly repositionable. They come in a variety of styles, colours and motifs - from a full scene-scape to cute colourful dots, stars, bears or batman motifs.collected.co.nz has a great selection, with prices starting at $25.
2: Quirky plates
Positioning plates on the wall reminds us of our Nanna's house. We love nostalgic style with a quirky modern twist, like these china wall pieces from Odd One Out. Artist Niki Gribble breathes new life into unique vintage plates by adding hand-painted illustrations. Each piece is unique and can be customised with names and a date for an extra $5. Plates, $60, from Mildred & Co.
Create your own colourful avian wall display featuring these gorgeous handmade glass birds, produced in Auckland by Kiwi Luke Jacomb and his American partner, Katherine Rutecki. The creative couple started making swallows and now, using glass and crystal, craft native birds such as fantails, wax-eyes, bellbirds and kingfishers ($325 each) as well as the glorious tui ($525). They can be screwed straight on to the wall. Available from Auckland Art Gallery.
4: Planter boxes
Greenery sprouting from the wall looks gorgeous by adding life to a bare space indoors and out, and it's a space-saving solution for apartment-dwellers. We love these painted bamboo boxes ($48 each) made in Auckland by Native Creative couple, Aly and Harm. They're only small, perfect for succulents and herbs, and can be hung on the wall, we say in a small grouping, using pegs available in the same colourways as the planters.
5: Neon Art Words
Inject some loving light to your room with these cool neon shapes. Made from tubular glass in typewriter font, the lit up Seletti letters sit about 4cm from the wall. They are easy to mount and brackets are included. Made in the UK, sold at the Auckland Art Gallery, pick your favourite word (home, love, light or art) from $395 or the love heart symbol ($195) to add a bit of a warehouse feel to your space.
