If it's not the 50s, its all about the 70s. If it's not rust tones, it's all about blue - but then who cares? Take a moment to throw the rule book out the window this season. As fashion trends continue to move at a breakneck speed, the only thing that matters is the individual.

Seven of our favourite models bring to life this season's standout pieces.

What does independence mean to you?

Independence is time to learn about yourself, time to create. I think life would be limited without individuality.

Why does individual style matter?

It's a form of expression and hopefully it inspires others and makes people feel good.

What is one item of clothing you can't live without and why is it important to you?

I have a mohair forest-green coat I like a lot.

Whose personal style do you admire and why?

Anyone who "owns it" really. It's always cool to walk past people who look great and feel good about it too. It's always good to compliment people you think look awesome. It makes people feel amazing.

Ngahuia wears Marc by Marc Jacobs dress, $1169, from Workshop. Lola & Grace pavé drop earrings, $89.90.

That you don't let anyone make choices for you, because it's your life and you decide how to live it.

Why does individual style matter?

Because it shows who you are. It's a way of expressing yourself, like art.

What is one item of clothing you can't live without and why is it important
to you?

Hippie pants! Because they are so comfortable, bright and vibrant. They make me happy.

Alessandra Ambrosio, because she dresses comfortably but is stylish.

Helena wears Harman Grubisca cowl-neck top, $360, and leather A-line skirt, $650. Louis Vuitton monogram belt, $645. Diamond earrings (POA) from Partridge Jewellers. Lola & Grace cocktail ring, $89.

Fred Scahill

What does independence mean to you?

Independence is something I am still trying to grasp hold of. I feel like I have to be completely isolated in order to achieve this.

Why does individual style matter?

If everybody looked the same all the time, the world would seem a little communist-like wouldn't it? Maybe it matters so people can put you into a stereotype. Does it really matter what people think about the way you dress or look?

What is one item of clothing you can't live without and why is it important to you?

I have this pair of blue denim jeans (I think they're Lee Smokers or 1970s) that are completely ripped and bloodstained remnants of my alternative youth. I still wear them occasionally and get strange looks wherever I go, but they're of sentimental value and I love them!

Whose personal style do you admire and why?

I really admire Nick Cave's style a lot. He has his punk roots of course, but he's the rock 'n' roller who put on a suit, yellow patent leather shoes, some shiny rings and a slick haircut. It's ballroom-like and it works. Of course, he may think that's wrong on so many levels, but I love it.

Fred wears Liam turtleneck, $139. Adidas jacket, $120. Jeans model's own.

Independence is to be without agenda.

Why does individual style matter?

Individual style is having the grace to pull off what you feel is yours to begin with.

Whose personal style do you admire and why?

I admire my late mother's style.

Miu Miu tweed top, $1330, duchesse skirt, $3670, and belt, $390. Levi's jacket, $209.90. Earrings model's own.

What does independence mean to you?

To me independence is when you step out into the world and have your own thoughts and feelings on things. It's not just buying your own food and setting your own bedtime, it's when you start having informed thoughts and making decisions because you want to.

Why does individual style matter?

It expresses who you are and what mood you're channelling. Finding your own style makes you feel more confident in yourself because it's communicating your thoughts and feelings without having to say a word.

What is one item of clothing you can't live without and why is it important to you?

I'd say my oversized boys' plain white tee is my love of the moment. It's super-versatile, it can be dressed up or just paired with a nice pair of blue boyfriend jeans. I am all about chic comfort.

Whose personal style do you admire and why?

I really admire a fellow model, Caroline Brasch Neilson. She always looks so effortless. I love how she dresses simply but will throw in a pattern or bold colour. She is just a cool girl.

Equipment silk shirt, $395, from Adorno. Kate Sylvester sweater, $365. Zambesi pants, $495. 18ct white gold 1.41ct diamond stud earrings, $8954, from Walker & Hall.

Danielle Hayes

What does independence mean to you?

To me independence means being able to stand on one's own two feet, being accepting of who you are.

It personifies me as me and you as you!

What is one item of clothing you can't live without and why is it important to you?

Undies ... Just because.

Whose personal style do you admire and why?

I choose not to admire just one style of a particular person. My inspirations are the oddballs who push the limit of fashion.

Prada jacquard top, $3270, and skirt, $1530. Vintage coin pendant stylist's own.

Mariska van der Zee

Mariska van der Zee.

What does independence mean to you?

To me it means not being dependent on other people's opinions about any decisions in life, whether it is about which career path to choose or the way I feel like dressing today. Support of my loved ones is, of course, positive, but I try to never let other people's opinions impede my chosen life path.

Why does individual style matter?

When someone dresses in whatever style is their own, to me that reflects a strong personality.

What is one item of clothing you can't live without and why is it important to you?

My basketball shoes. I take them everywhere I travel. The first thing I do after I arrive somewhere is search for a busy court to play pick-up basketball with locals.

Whose personal style do you admire and why?

Any celebrity who dares not to use a personal stylist. I understand the pressure is high for them and therefore I admire anyone who dares to stand by their own personal style such as Diane Kruger or Kate Moss.
