Dan Ahwa, Creative and Fashion Director of Viva Magazine and the style editor for Canvas magazine, specialises in premium magazine features across fashion, design, arts and culture.
I'm Dan Ahwa, the Creative and Fashion Director of Viva Magazine and the Style Editor for Canvas magazine. I’ve been working in the industry since 2009. I have a passion for magazines and amplifying the voices of creatives who help us think critically about the world we inhabit. Specialising in premium magazine features across fashion, design, arts and culture, makes me appreciate the vital role magazines play in a newsroom. I spent two years in the UK before returning home to complete a Degree in Media Studies and Art History. I've worked as a photographer's assistant and edited Apparel magazine, a trade title covering everything from our local manufacturing industry to the retail beat. The job has taken me everywhere from Berlin to Shanghai. I love being on assignment in a new environment challenged by the hunt for a good story. The people are interesting. Whether it's discussing the state of luxury with CEO's like LVMH's Michael Burke in Bermuda; or sharing ideas to help our Pasifika and Maori rangatahi thrive with choreographer Parris Goebel in L.A. I rarely insert myself into a story unless necessary, which is probably why I found writing this awkward. Yes, surprise an awkward journalist. Telling people's stories in a creative way is what I love - imagery, video, audio, typography are equally important to the words.
