Veteran Hollywood actor James Caan will star in a big-budget New Zealand film based around Dunedin's Larnach family.
Castle of Lies, with a budget reported at between $10 million and $17 million, is a story of love and betrayal in the late 19th century.
It tells the story of Connie, a beautiful woman who escapes her dull life by marrying the much older, charismatic William Larnach, but then falls in love with his son.
Caan has made more than 50 movies since the 1960s.
Castle of Lies is being made by First Sun, an associated company of the production house The Gibson Group.
The company's website said the movie was based on Michael Forster's award-winning play, Larnach.
The screenplay has been written by Emma Frost and the film will be directed by Yvonne Mackay. Shooting is due to begin in four weeks.
