Michael Feyen voted Horowhenua mayor

Michael Feyen is the new mayor of Horowhenua.

Preliminary results from Saturday's elections show Mr Feyen, who has been a Kere Kere ward councillor for three years, received 4488 votes to incumbent Brendan Duffy's 4371, a difference of 117 votes.

The voter return was 51 per cent, with 11,560 votes cast, excluding special votes.

Mr Duffy, who had been mayor for 12 years, said in a statement: "I respect the democratic process, the community have made their decision, I wish the new council every success".

Mr Feyen was also voted on to the MidCentral District Health Board.

The official election result is set to be announced on Thursday.
