Justin Bieber's 'cumbersome' Calvin Klein advert has been the subject of much debate - so it's hardly surprising SNL used it for some fodder this week.

Amid a firestorm of controversy about the underwear ad's legitimacy the TV skit featured Kate McKinnon playing Biebs.

Pouting, flexing and preening McKinnon made a fine job of impersonating the 20-year-old pop star's myriad Instagram posts.

"Are my muscles cute?" she asked before sniffing her own armpit and gagging at the stench.

Acting like a giant baby she rolled around on a scooter and cried huffily after becoming drowsy.

"Yo! All this underwear is making me tired," she grumbled petulantly.

After kicking away her female partner she hogged the limelight again for the final tagline:

"My Calvins, clothes for my big wiener," she exclaimed while pointing proudly to her exaggeratedly padded crotch region.

The comedy short was part of the NBC live show - hosted this week by The Wedding Ringer actor Kevin Hart.

The night started with a skit to mark Martin Luther King Day - and the lack of Oscar nominations for the movie Selma.

Lorde swiftly shakes off loss

"That sounds like a great movie," said Kenan Thompson who was playing a resurrected Martin Luther King Jr.

"That must be lined up for plenty of Oscars," he added to silence, then moans from the crowd.

"Guess we still have a high mountain to climb," he continued wistfully.

King then asked who is leading the campaign for improving diversity in the USA these days.

"Macklemore," said Pete Davidson who was playing a bemused student trying to explain things to King.

"Who is Macklemore?" Asked King

"He's from Seattle, and he's like the whitest dude on earth," explained Davidson's character.

Race relations seemed to be the theme of the night with Al Sharpton's Diversity Taskforce likened to "a kick ass Saturday morning cartoon".

In a gripe about the lack of black people up for Oscars this year Michael Che said: "I can't tell you who deserves to be nominated...I mean of all the movies Selma is the only one I'll even pretend to see".

"But really...I get that it's hard to pronounce a lot of these names," he added as images of Lupita Nyong'o, Quvenzhané Wallis, Barkhad Abdi and Chiwetel Ejiofor flashed up behind him.

"But that's what makes awards shows so fun... just imagine John Travolta as he introduces the 'wickedly talented David Oyelowo'," he chuckled impersonating Travolta's blunder at last year's ceremony.

Hart focused his solo on describing his fear of raccoons, mountain lions, and other wild beasts.

"I don't know if I want to be with a woman what's survived a mountain lion attack," he joked.

In a mock game show "Why'd You Post That?" social media users were punished for their shoddy or inappropriate Internet correspondence.

Aidy Bryant was chastised for a gruesome 'toe injury' image.

"Who wants to see that?" Scolded Hart.

Other Instagram, Twitter and Facebook faux pas such as the "sexy selfie with a dubious background" and pseudo sympathy were also mocked.

Later, during a James Brown impression, Hart was having trouble getting cooperation from his hungry bandmates.

"Shall we take it to the bridge?" He asked.

"No," said the trumpeter.

"What? Just a flat no?" He squawked.

"Ok let's get food," he conceded eventually.

Musical interludes were provided by Australian solo artist Sia. The 39-year-old wore a striking monochrome ensemble to perform her hit Elastic Heart. This was accompanied by two ballerina girls arguing through the medium of dance - wearing nude leotards that have become associated with the track.

She also performed Chandelier with a distressed mime artist as backup.

The Weekend Update section used a crack about Chris Christie's state of the state address in New Jersey.

"It's like a state of the union address but every sentence ends with 'but you didn't hear that from me'."

Fictional "Mrs Santini" then turned up with few tips to deal with annoying, smelly and noisy neighbours - as are customary in New York City.

"Leave a nice note," she exclaimed before reeling out a series of caustically sarcastic letters to dispel antisocial behavior.

A woman in China who 'cut off her husband's penis twice' was applauded.

"That kind of work ethic is exactly why China is beating the US," grinned Che.

Kevin Hart was then put on the spot for a 'paternity test' with Jared Farrow playing his grown up son.

While the two exhibited corresponding mannerisms and ticks the staggering height difference threw Hart.

"Have you seen the size of him?" he asked incredulously.

Next week country singer Blake Shelton will host the show.
