What a year in the world of celebrities.

George Clooney quit the bachelor club, Jay-Z suffered a lift belting at the hands of his sister-in-law, Iggy Azalea bloomed, Chris Hemsworth was named Sexiest Man Alive and Hollywood greats, from Lauren Bacall to Robin Williams, bid farewell.

There was even a love octagon.

Here's the highlights and lowlights of Hollywood and beyond in 2014.

Love octagon

OK, to understand the most complex love octagon in the history of Hollywood you need to concentrate.

So, Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom were married, but split.

James Packer and Erica Packer were married, but split.

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were together, but split.

Justin and Miranda allegedly hooked up.

Orlando and Selena allegedly hooked up.

Tom was allegedly smitten with Miranda.

Katie? Well, maybe in 2015 she'll hook up with Orlando, James and The Biebs.

PS: Orlando had a dust up with The Biebs in an Ibiza nightclub.

Nicole Kidman

It was a tough year for Nicole Kidman.

Not only did her beloved dad, Dr Antony Kidman, suddenly die on a trip to Singapore, but the Oscar-winning actress had a stinker career year.

Her box office bomb Before I Go To Sleep should have been renamed If You Buy A Ticket To This You Will Go To Sleep.

Nic's 2013 Oscar hope (until people saw the film), Grace of Monaco, is yet to be released in US theatres.

Her next film, the new take on cuddly bear Paddington, had a strong opening in the UK, but won't hit the US until the new year.

The Met Gala is one of New York's great nights and in 2014 it had one of the great fights (If you say that rhyme with a rap beat it sounds great).

It all happened in a lift at the after-party.

The world thought rap giant Jay-Z and superstar wife Beyonce lived a life of bliss, but in the lift (captured on surveillance video) hell broke loose.

Beyonce's little siss, Solange, went after Jay-Z with haymakers.

Beyonce later sang in her new Flawless remix: "Of course sometimes (expletive) goes down when it's a billion dollars in an elevator".

The Mullumbimby rapper born Amethyst Amelia Kelly, but known worldwide as Iggy Azalea, had a huge 2014.

In June she matched The Beatles when her single Fancy topped Billboard's Hot 100 and her collaboration with Ariana Grande's song Problem, was number two.

Azalea also had run-ins with rappers Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Rah Digga.

Digga made a dig at Azalea for not rapping in an Australian accent.

"Don't come to America and try to convince me that you're Gangsta Boo," Digga articulately said in an interview.

Publicity-shy Adelaide singer-songwriter Sia Furler proved you don't have to do a Kim Kardashian and pose with your naked butt covered in oil.

Sia posed on the cover of America's Billboard magazine with a paper bag on her head.

When she performed live, including on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, she did it with her back to the audience.

Her album 1000 Forms of Fear still topped the Billboard 200 chart.

Sexiest man alive

As we all know Australia has the sexiest men alive.

Chris Hemsworth proved it again when People magazine named the former Home & Away beefcake Sexiest Man Alive, joining a club in which Mel Gibson and Hugh Jackman are members.

Weird baby names

Hollywood law states when celebrities have a baby they MUST give their newborn a ridiculous name.

A few stars broke the law in 2014.

Scarlett Johansson could be in trouble after naming her daughter Rose, Bruce Willis, known to get whacky with bub names, simply went with Evelyn for his new daughter and LeeLee Sobieski named her boy Martin.

As for the rest?

Rocker Pete Wentz (son Saint Lazslo), Christina Aguilera (daughter Summer Rain), rapper Lil Kim (daughter Royal Reign), Big Bang Theory star Simon Helberg (son Wilder Towne), singer Kelly Clarkson (daughter River Rose), Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale (son Apollo), Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green (son Bodhi Ransom) and Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher (daughter Wyatt).

Weird baby announcements

Actors Jason Biggs and Jenny Mollen named their son Sid.

Not too bad.

But, what outraged some is they announced on Instagram their son had "a huge penis" and then shared photos of his circumcision.

Former Jonas Brother boy band member Kevin Jonas also upset some by linking tweets of the birth of his baby girl Alena with ads for a laundry detergent.

Celebrity marriages

Plenty of studs and beauties walked down the aisle in 2014.

The perennial, silver fox bachelor George Clooney wed lawyer-activist Amal Alumuddin in Venice and his good ol' mate Brad Pitt finally put a wedding ring on Angelina Jolie's finger.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West tied the knot, although USA Today's sports betting expert Danny Sheridan says it is a "virtual lock" they'll break up by May 2015.

Celebrity deaths

Turn down the lights and play the sad music.

2014 was the last act for: Robin Williams, Lauren Bacall, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Shirley Temple, Mickey Rooney, Richard Attenborough, Mike Nichols, L'Wren Scott, Joan Rivers, James Garner, Bob Hoskins, Peaches Geldof and Brady Bunch housekeeper Ann B. Davis.

Celebrity splits

Turn the lights back on and play happy music because these couples split so we may have a (very small) shot at dating them.

Modern Family siren Sofia Vergara broke up with businessman Nick Loeb, although technically she is still off the market after hooking up with True Blood hunk Joe Manganiello.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin "consciously uncoupled".

Chris Martin and Jennifer Lawrence consciously got sick of each other.

Katy Perry and John Mayer, two months after releasing their duet Who Do You Love, split.

Actress Angie Harmon said farewell to former NFL hubby Jason Seahorn.

Paula Patton officially kicked Robin Thicke to the curb despite the crooner grovelling publicly, including devoting his major flop of an album, titled Paula, to her.

The couple known as Captain and Tennille ended their 40-year marriage.

Bodyguard Martin Kirsten lost his job, as well as supermodel girlfriend Heidi Klum, when they parted ways.

Sam's New York bingle

A stroll in New York's West Village for Lara Bingle ended with her man, Australian action man Sam Worthington, and local paparazzo Sheng Li, behind bars.

Bingle claimed Li kicked her, Worthington stepped in and threw punches at Li and then the NYPD arrived and carted the two men off.

Prosecutors later dropped the assault charges against Li and Worthington secured a conditional discharge on a misdemeanour assault count.
