Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery is showcasing works by Michael Parekowhai and Ralph Hotere in Black Rainbow, an exhibition which opens next Thursday.
Black Rainbow, developed by Te Papa and curated by Megan Tamati-Quennell, features the stunning red carved grand piano created by Parekowhai for the 2011 Venice Biennale sitting amid a selection of "black paintings" by Hotere.
The return of the piano, titled He Korero Purakau mo Te Awanui o Te Motu: Story of a New Zealand River, to the region is befitting as it was built and demonstrated there before travelling to Venice.
Black Rainbow will feature talks and music events, including free classic and jazz recitals on Saturday afternoons and the chance for members of the public to book to play the piano on Sunday afternoons. Te Uru director Andrew Clifford will deliver a talk on December 14 at 2pm, 101 Pianos: The Keyboard in Contemporary Culture.
