High-school students will have the chance to win one of three $1500 New Zealand Herald scholarships this year to help them pay their way through university.
Since 1999, the Herald has been offering scholarships to top students who do not have family financial support.
Entries are open to students in the Herald's circulation area taking part in examinations run by the New Zealand Education and Scholarship Trust (NZEST), which awards about 90 of its own scholarships to students each year.
The examinations, which attract entries from more than 200 schools, will run from November 7 to 16. Students can choose from 19 subjects, and must enter in a minimum of four. Entries close on Friday, August 17.
"They're a great way of stretching the able students of New Zealand," said Sarah Taylor, the executive officer of NZEST. "It's very important to keep challenging them."
Ms Taylor said schools could nominate one student for the Herald scholarships, which will be awarded in December once the NZEST results are known.
Student nominations must be endorsed by a school principal or deputy principal and say why the student deserves support.
A letter from the student, outlining in 250 words why a Herald scholarship is important to his or her future, must accompany the nomination.
Application forms, which are being sent to schools, must be returned to the Herald by October 31.
