A wheelchair bound woman suffered a cut and bruised head after a man punched her several times, Whangarei police said today.
Senior Sergeant Steve Rudsdale said the woman was in a vehicle yesterday in Raumanga about 9.30am with a man who "for some reason" became agitated.
The woman has little movement and uses a wheelchair, Mr Rudsdale said.
The man punched her in the head several times, resulting in the woman suffering a cut lip, eye and bruised forehead and cheek.
A 49-year-old man was held in police custody overnight and was to appear in the Whangarei District Court today charged with injuring with intent to injure.
