The method was mocked by many online commentators.
“Donald Trump may have executed the single worst coin flip in history,” wrote former congressional candidate Hal Stewart. “That coin is headed to the hall of shame!”
“President Trump redefined the ceremonial coin toss. No flip. No rotation. Just a straight-up lob that left the internet and maybe the referee stunned,” one fan commented on X.
The Army team correctly called the coin toss but were just beaten by the Navy in a close 17-16 game.
While the President’s fumble is relatively innocuous, other recent missteps by America’s leader have been more serious in nature. In early December, during a meeting trying to secure a peace agreement between Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi, Trump joked about the two African nations “killing each other” and bungled leaders’ names.
“These two gentlemen are very smart and I think they liked each other a lot. I spent time with them,” Trump said.
“Some people may be surprised,” Trump continued. ”I think they’ve spent a lot of time killing each other and now they’re going to spend a lot of time hugging, holding hands and taking advantage of the United States of America economically, like every other country does.”
In April, US Vice-President JD Vance dropped the College Football Playoff National Championship trophy while posing for a photo with the Ohio State University Football team.
