A crazy cat nap with Lil Bub

A sleepover with a magical space cat and the human friends she can talk to. Not weird at all, right? Not when the cat is internet superstar, Lil Bub.

The internet cat celebrity (yes, it is a thing - think Grumpy Cat, Maru, href="https://www.facebook.com/colonelmeowinthecity" target="_blank">Colonel Meow) is the star - and host - of Lil Bub: Sleepover Special, a one-off TV show that prompts more than a little head-scratching.

"What we wanted to do was to make something that really represented who Bub is - she's a very unique cat, she's from space, she performs magic. There is nothing Bub can't do, including having one of the most imaginative and bizarre television shows to ever be on TV," says Lil Bub's owner - or "dude" - Mike Bridavsky.

With pajama-clad pals like Raising Hopes' Amy Seadris and party rocker Andrew WK, as well as various animals and creatures that her human guests can talk to (and understand), Bridavsky isn't kidding when he calls it strange.

But like everything Lil Bub does, it's magnetic viewing.

Bub's story has fast become one of internet folklore. The runt in a litter of feral, but healthy, kittens, she was rescued by a friend of Bridavsky. He adopted her soon after meeting her - it was love at first sight.

Now three-years-old, Bub was born with several genetic mutations including dwarfism and a short lower jaw, causing her tongue to constantly stick out. She has no teeth and suffers from osteoptrosis, also known as marble bone disease, which gives her a "great waddle". Her unique features are what earnt her the "space cat" tag.

But none of it has got in her way to becoming arguably the biggest cat on the internet. She has 37,000 Twitter followers, almost 400,000 Instagram fans. There have been calendars, t-shirts, books - and even book signings - a webseries and a film about Bub and her internet cat friends. She has even met Robert De Niro.

Bridavsky calls his feline companion a "bit of a miracle".

"Her physical appearance makes her one-of-a-kind of course. But beyond that, it's her inspirational and positive outlook on life. The way she has a complete lack of self-awareness, but at the same time, she is hugely self-aware, which I get terribly confused about," he says with a laugh.

"I think a lot of people don't understand her temperament because it is so unusual. But her whole demeanor is actually so much more unusual than her looks. But people stay around and are interested in her life, I think, because she has such an interesting story and the way she handles everything is really amazing."

Bridavsky says he never seeks out opportunities and publicity for Bub - a lot of the pairs' work includes fundraising activities for the likes of the SPCA. But the travel and fame has certainly helped her; effective treatments for her many ailments have been found because of her high profile.

And he says while the glitz and glamour of showbiz is all around her, Bub is a pretty normal cat, all things considered.

"She wakes me up at 6.30am when it's time to eat - and she's a very noisy, bossy cat when she's hungry. I'll feed her, she'll clean herself and then proceed to pass out. So she's not a normal cat, but she does things that resemble a normal cat."
