FRESH IN: The good times continue with sweet and so-flavoursome plums from the Hawkes Bay joining the bountiful stone fruit in store. White and yellow nectarines and peaches are plentiful and available for a great price. Round
beans, courgettes, eggplants, sweetcorn, avocados, capsicums and (regular and cherry) tomatoes are good buying. Thank goodness for summer! There’s a good range of lettuces, leafy greens and herbs in stock too. Local watermelons, sweet Dole Gold pineapples and bananas are deliciously affordable and perfect for a summery fruit salad. “Our beautifully bright bananas are bountiful and are good buying. Mainly grown in the ideal tropical climate of Ecuador, we source Fairtrade certified and organic Fairtrade bananas from the region to ensure fairness to local farmers, workers and the environment,” says New World Fresh Expert Brigit Corson. LOOK FOR: perfectly ripe Yummy SweetTango apples from the sun Hawkes Bay and crisp Royal Gala Apples from Gisborne are available now and more delicious apple varieties will come thick and fast as autumn approaches. Still talking early arrivals, the first of the still-soft-skinned garlic is here too. The cloves are crisper, plumper and milder than the drier, papery-covered heads we will buy as the crop hardens later on. “Our new season garlic from Pukekohe has arrived and as the flavoursome season progresses crops from Marlborough will be available in-store through till late October early November ,” says Brigit.
MOVING ON: Get your fill while you can of cherries and apricots. Supply of both usually winds down during February. Australian mangoes are on the way out, but you’ll find plentiful supplies of Ecuadorian mangoes in-store.
