Sony slumps in latest quarter

Consumer electronics giant Sony Corp said yesterday that group net profit tumbled 98 per cent in the latest quarter, hurt by slumping sales for its Trinitron televisions and waning demand for PlayStation 2 game consoles.

Sony said group net profit totalled 1.12 billion ($16 million) for the April to June period versus last year's first quarter profit of 57.18 billion.

Revenue fell 6.9 per cent to 1.6 trillion.
